A Hollywood makeup artist reveals her most-prized items
Though Nikki DeRoest’s signature makeup is utterly of-the-moment—textured, soft brows paired with a minimalistic, natural glow—she executes it with timeless precision. Her face-painting talent caught Rosie’s eye on Instagram, and after a few DMs, a beautiful relationship bloomed. Now DeRoest is among RHW’s favorite makeup artists—and she’ll be appearing, along with Katie Jane Hughes, at our first-ever Master Class on October 26. Here, a glimpse into DeRoest’s makeup bag—and into the skills and personality that make her a rising star.
OKAY, NIKKI, WHAT’S IN YOUR BAG?
“It literally is like a magic eraser. You’ll know what I mean when you try it.”
“I’m obsessed with this product. I use it both morning and night before any of my other skincare, and my skin looks so fresh and healthy because of it. It’s like giving your body a health shot, but for your face. It’s also amazing for airplanes.”
“It’s just heaven. Actually, the whole Neo Nude collection rocks my world.”
“I like lashes. Full, fat lashes. This mascara builds them up beautifully and layers well!”
“A few drops are all you need, and the skin can absorb it like a champ! It’s amazing under makeup.”
“I put it on at night and watch my discoloration and old spots going away.”
“Keeps my hair alive and safe from heat styling. It keeps the nutrients in, and has helped heal some breakage and prevent future damage.”
“Specifically: the domed powder brushes and eyeshadow brushes. The shape is perfection.”
“I always carry it in my bag to give my lips moisture and a hint of color. I don’t have to think about it and they always look amazing!”
To me, modern beauty is
fresh, not perfect or too “done,” glowing, and done with a pop of something to catch your attention.
Right now I’m inspired by
beauty books from the ‘90s, indie female artists, and ad campaigns in magazines. (Yes, I am one of the few who still buys magazines and tears out inspo all the time!)
My kit isn’t complete without
All versions of Armani foundations. Tom Ford eyeshadow palettes, Nars Velvet Matte lip pencils, Kevyn Aucoin concealer, BareMinerals Bareskin Complete Coverage Serum Concealer, Stila Stay All Day brow markers, and Hourglass highlighters and Ambient powders.
Everyone should try
A sound bath at least once. A body rolfer, an acupuncturist, a hot yoga class… am I sounding so LA yet?
The best beauty advice I ever received is
I don’t know if I’ve gotten a lot of beauty advice, to be honest. I feel like I’m always dishing it. So: Do whatever you need to do to feel pretty and confident. Beauty is so personal.
This is my beauty philosophy
Beauty is beyond just what you put on your face. It’s what you put in your body, how you care for your body, and how you treat your mind. All of those things affect you and how you are as a person, and how you show up in the world. How you show up is what ultimately makes you beautiful. All the makeup is just the extra frosting on top of the cake.
If I could have only one beauty product
it would be coconut oil. You can use it one million different ways.
My biggest beauty regret
I’ve had some bad looks throughout the years, but no regrets. Everything I do is an experience, and it shapes who I am today.
To make it in this business, you need
to be willing to put in the time, energy, and hard work. Be open, say yes, be a lifelong student, be nice, and have fun. If you have fun, it shows, and people are attracted to that. The money comes when you’re having fun.
The biggest challenge of my career
Not getting ahead of myself. I have big goals and dreams, and it’s easy to think about the things I haven’t done yet instead of celebrating all the amazing things I have done.
My favorite quote
“Let it all go. Expect miracles. Wait without anxiety. And know the universe has your back.” —Gabrielle Bernstein
My biggest beauty splurge
is my Celluma Pro LED light. It was the cost of a designer handbag, but who doesn’t want to age backward like Benjamin Button?!
My biggest beauty steal
is Maybelline Brow Drama. Say no more.
