Cassandra Grey’s mornings start with meditation and Chanel

Like any beauty aficionada worth her Chanel No. 5, all of us at Rose Inc. are enamored of Violet Grey. Endlessly inspiring and impressively creative, the beauty site marries Hollywood glamour with a curated selection of the best products for hair, skin, makeup, and more.

At its helm is founder Cassandra Grey, whose own chicness might just prompt you to finally get that pixie cut you’ve been thinking about. “Cassandra is always discovering the next life-changing product,” RHW says of her longtime friend. “Every time we get together, we wind up swapping notes on everything from night cream to the perfect cherry lip color.” Here, Grey shares a glimpse into how she starts and ends her day. It’s luxurious, intelligent, and full of personality—just like the woman herself.

Morning

What time do you wake up?

6 a.m. on the dot. This gives me an hour to roll a bunch of emails before Jules, my three-year-old, wakes up.

What do you sleep in?

I want to say I sleep naked, but I actually sleep in an x Karla, oversized, genderless, t-shirt, La Perla lounge pants, underwear, and socks. I know socks are weird, but I am being honest.

Is anyone in bed with you?

[Girlfriend Samantha Ronson] is in bed with me when she isn’t on tour. She usually sleeps until 11! We keep different hours.

What’s your first order of business in the morning?

I get on my knees and pray every morning, just in case.

What’s the first thing you do with your phone?

Check texts and emails. This is when I write anything creative—like interview answers for the prettiest new beauty site Rose Inc., for example.

What’s the first thing you read?

I still read the old-fashioned papers in bed. I love the papers and coffee in bed: The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and the New York Post. And to the extent there is a deck for some Violet Grey initiative, I read that too.

What’s on your bedside table?

Chanel La Crème Main Hand Creme. It’s Violet Code-approved, and the packaging makes me so happy. They designed it in Japan. Sio Beauty medical grade silicone power patches—these are magic. Go, Dog. Go! book for bedtime with my son, Jules. The big book of Alcoholics Anonymous. Le Labo Santal 26 Candle. A glass water bottle.

What’s your favorite thing about your bedroom?

I get to share it with Samantha, and Jules comes and cuddles with us before he goes to bed.

What do you eat and drink for breakfast?

Coffee. I also just started drinking a nutritional shake.

Who’s the first person you speak to in the morning?

Jules.

How do you mentally prepare yourself for the day?

Meditation. I use the golden light meditation on YouTube.

Shower, bath, or do you do it later in the day?

Shower. I get ideas in the shower. Did you know that there is scientific data that suggests that something about being in water stimulates your brain?

What is your morning skincare regime?

Well, basically, I have a world-class skin care routine that I switch every three months. It’s all obviously Violet Code-approved, which means it’s been deemed best in class by committee. I usually have four steps in the morning and five steps in the evening. I don’t wash my face in the morning. Step one is Dr. Barbara Sturm Hyaluronic serum mixed with Anti-Pollution drops. Step two is By Terry Baume de Rose lip balm. Step three is Augustinus Bader The Rich Cream. Step four is Dr. Barbara Sturm eye cream. It’s all expensive but worth it. If I didn’t have my employee discount, I would opt for French pharmacy products.

What are your a.m. hair vibes?

My haircut is beyond easy.  All I do is spray it with Christophe Robin’s Rose Water Volumizing Mist and Ouai Wave Spray mixed together.

What makeup products do you use on a daily basis?

YSL Touche Éclat Radiant Touch.  Every woman (and man) should have this concealer highlighter in their cosmetic wardrobe. Tom Ford Lip Color. Benefit Hoola bronzer. MAC Cream Colour Base in Pearl. Chanel Inimitable mascara. By Terry Cheek to Cheek in red for my eyelids. Aubergine eyeliner.

Moonlight

At what time do you shift to evening mode?

Ha. 4 p.m.

In the evening, you are…

Giving Jules a bath, putting him to bed, and either watching Netflix or eating ice cream—sometimes both.

If you’re going out, how do you change your look?

Heavy-dirty-wet-smudgy eye shadow by Tom Ford.

What’s your favorite way to relax and unwind in the evening?

Dinner with my girl or my girls!

What TV show are you currently watching? What’s the last film you saw? What book are you reading?

Black Mirror, and I highly recommend it. I recently watched Walk The Line, which I love so much. Go, Dog. Go! is Jules’s favorite book.

What’s your favorite way to take a look from morning to moonlight?

Black eyeliner and Tom Ford bronzer.

Do you prefer an end-of-day bath or shower?

Sometimes I love a hot shower before I go to bed. I don’t have a bathtub, but now you mention it, that sounds nice, too.

What is your evening skincare routine?

Five steps. See morning skincare routine with the addition of Indie Lee cleanser.

What is your evening hair routine?

Nothing.

What is the last beauty product you use at night?

Chanel No. 5 parfum.

What are your bedtime rituals?

If I’m alone, I do all kinds of crazy stuff like Hanacure or Patchology Posh Peel or Ziip.

What time do you go to bed? What time do you go to sleep?

I go to bed often at 9:00 and I go to sleep often by 9:01.
