The no-rules guide to fall lipstick

As far as revamping your lipstick rotation for autumn is concerned, it can be tempting to swap tangerine for oxblood and call it a day. But—while conventional beauty wisdom preaches brighter hues for summer and moodier hues for fall—we’re here to make a case for sticking to your favorite red lip year-round. “The climate of beauty right now is very liberal; everyone is feeling adventurous with color and texture,” notes celebrity makeup artist Vincent Oquendo. Blurring the lines between what’s expected of the season? “Very refreshing and exciting,” he says.

Below, three ways to fall-ify your lipstick (none of which involve tossing your favorite orange-based red).

“The climate of beauty right now is very liberal; everyone is feeling adventurous with color and texture.”

Like swapping silk for velvet, it might just be the finish of your favorite lipstick that gives it a new, fall-like feel. “I’m texture obsessed; the lips are the perfect place to play,” Oquendo says. His hack: “First, apply your favorite summery, shiny lipstick” (such as Chantecaille Lip Chic, $38). “Next, split a tissue. Powder the tissue with a loose powder.” (Try Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder, $38). Dab gently onto lips, et voila — you’ve got yourself a super-cozy matte. For extra depth, Oquendo suggests lining lips with a pencil that’s slightly darker than the lip color shade.

Turns out, chiseling isn’t just for cheeks. Oquendo points to lip contouring—a modern take on the duo-toned ’90s lip—as an up-and-coming trend for fall 2018. Try a beige lipstick with darker brown liner (he swears by Kevyn Aucoin Flesh Tone Lip Pencil in Cerise, $25). Alternatively, a classic cherry lip, like Pat McGrath Labs LuxeTrance lipstick in Major Red or Covergirl Colorlicious Lipstick in Hot, and burgundy liner fares splendidly for a night out.

Opposites attract. Highlight a matte lip by dialing up the contrast — with an ultra-dewy, bronzey canvas (luckily, sunkissed skin needn’t be siloed to the summer months!). “Glowy, super-bronzed skin is seasonless,” says Oquendo, who is fond of pairing a radiant visage with a “deep, jewel toned matte lipstick” for fall. (He points to brands like Fenty for inspiration on this look; see its Mattemoiselle Plush Matte Lipstick in Ma’Damn, above.)

This is amazing! Thank you so much for your innovative posts, they make me so happy 😀 I was wondering, could you do a post on the best moisturizers, best serums, best exfoliators? I want to completely revamp my skincare, and I’m thinking of investing in some Dr Dennis Gross, but I would love a post on some alternatives!! Xx
