Model Jasmine Sanders on the “blond girl curse”

2018 is shaping up to be Jasmine Sanders’ best year yet. In only the past few months, the 27-year-old model and Instagram star has stunned at her first Met Gala, nabbed editorials in fashion mags Love and CR Fashion Book, and landed a campaign for Smashbox’s new Cover Shot eyeshadow palettes. Need we point out that the year is just barely half over? Here, Sanders divulges what’s on her bedside table, her secret to a clear mind, and her off-duty makeup philosophy.










Morning

What time do you wake up?

Seven? Seven-thirty? Before eight o’clock for sure.

What do you sleep in?

My boyfriend’s boxers and his favorite T-shirt.

Is anyone in bed with you?

My boyfriend, Terrence.

What’s your first order of business in the morning?

Feed the dogs. If my boyfriend already did that, I make the bed. As cheesy as it sounds, make your bed before you leave the house! It’ll make you feel really good when you get back.

What’s the first thing you do with your phone?

Instagram. It’s really terrible because people say that you should not be on your phone for an hour. I think Kanye said that, so I’ll give him that much. Not being on the phone for the first hour in the morning is very refreshing. But because I live in LA, I check my phone first thing, because agents are already up in New York.

What’s the first thing you read?

Texts. I probably text my mom first.

What’s on your bedside table?

Crystals, a candle from Barneys, and a mist diffuser for my lavender essential oil. Books. My notebook that has all of my jobs written down, and my journal. It’s not even really a diary, it’s just for when I’m about to crack and I either need to cry or scream or something. Instead, I write it down.

What’s your favorite thing about your bedroom?

The fireplace.

What do you eat and drink for breakfast?

I’m not huge on breakfast. I don’t do coffee at all. The smell of it gives me migraines. I’m a big tea drinker, though, and if I eat something, it’s usually either turkey bacon or chicken sausage, plus scrambled egg whites with sliced tomato and sliced avocado. Very healthy, very particular, all in one bite, very delicious.

How do you mentally prepare yourself for the day?

I need 10 minutes before I step out into the world. My oils really help me. I don’t even know if they actually work or if it’s just me mentally telling myself that they’ll calm me down. But just following that regimen every day makes things start well.

What is your morning skincare regime?

I’ve been using a Darphin moisturizer, which is amazing. I’m obsessed with Neutrogena face wipes, the blue pack. I clean my face with those and I use the moisturizer, and then I am obsessed with rosewater sprays.

What makeup products do you use on a daily basis?

I don’t like to wear a lot of makeup when I’m not working, but I rarely get a day like that. I love Anastasia’s clear brow gel, and then I fill my brows in, usually using the Anastasia colors as well. And I love highlighter: Champagne Pop from Becca and Anastasia Beverly Hills Illuminator in So Hollywood. [Ed. note: That shade has been discontinued, but this palette can create a similar effect.] For the past few weeks, I’ve been using a Dior lip scrub that has a little pink pigment.

Moonlight

At what time do you shift to evening mode?

Anywhere from 6:30 to 8:30.

In the evening, you are…

Trying to wind down to make sure all work’s done. Then? Relaxing.

If you’re going out, how do you change your look?

Adding a lip or a lash. I’m starting to really obsess over eyeshadows again, too.

What’s your favorite way to relax and unwind in the evening?

Netflix and eating really, really good food.

What TV show are you currently watching?

I’m obsessed with Homeland. I know I’m late to it! And I’m watching Nailed It. [Host] Nicole Byer is so funny—I really want to meet her. That show makes you want to cook; it also makes you want to eat a lot of crap you shouldn’t eat.

What’s the last film you saw?

I recently watched some European documentaries about Princess Diana. She was an incredible woman—someone to look up to. She treated everyone the same. She was shaking hands with people who had AIDS, back in a time when most people were afraid. She touched people’s souls.

What is your evening skincare routine?

I am obsessed with my Clarisonic. I use a lot of Cetaphil—moisturizers and face cleansers. And the Darphin moisturizer.

What is your evening hair routine?

Putting a hair mask on my hair and just letting it sit for a while. I go for anything that’s really conditioning or says that it will help with damaged ends. It’s the blond girl curse: Whether you’re highlighting or not highlighting, you always look like you have split ends.

What is the last beauty product you use at night?

Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist. It’s my first, last, everything.

What time do you go to bed? What time do you go to sleep?

Anywhere from 11:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. Even if I’m going to bed at 11, I’m probably still tossing and turning until 3. But when I do sleep, it’s really good.
