A London makeup artist’s secrets for flawless skin
The genius thing about Naoku Scintu‘s makeup is that it seems like it naturally belongs on the face. Pulling off such a feat is challenging enough when a look “just” involves a radiant complexion or neutral eye; it’s infinitely more difficult with a painterly swipe of cobalt. And yet, the London-based makeup artist always makes famous faces—including those of Karlie Kloss, Emily Ratajkowski, and Laura Harrier—seem as though they were born to wear, say, a glossy eggplant lip. Here, she shares her tools of the trade and passes along some of her best advice.
OKAY, NAOKO, WHAT’S IN YOUR BAG?
“Smells incredible, is organic, kills 99.9% of bacteria, and is English to the bone.”
“The perfect lip balm: super-conditioning and tastes amazing.”
“Glides on and melts into the skin. Obsessed!”
“Leaves the lips juicy and full. It’s my absolute favorite lipstick in life!”
TO ME, MODERN BEAUTY IS
appreciating and loving what you already have—and making the very best of these qualities.
MAKEUP EXCITES ME BECAUSE
it enables joyful and positive transformation.
I’M KNOWN FOR MY
healthy, dewy skin. I’ve been told by many that this is my signature.
I WISH EVERYONE WOULD TRY
Sun Chlorella A. It’s a freshwater single-cell green algae. I don’t have any gray hair because I’ve been taking this for years. It’s a really easy way to add more greens to your diet. I swear by this brand.
THE LAST BEAUTY PRODUCT I BOUGHT WAS
Ling Drying Lotion for spots and acne. It’s really easy to use as it has a pipet/dropper, which you use directly on the spots.
MY MAKEUP BAG ISN’T COMPLETE WITHOUT
MY SKINCARE SECRET
Regular visits to PfefferSal in London. My favorite facial is called Correct, Prevent, and Perfect. It’s for acneic, oily skin like mine.
MY MAKEUP M.O.
Less is more.
THREE WORDS THAT DESCRIBE ME
Perfectionist, punctual, Londoner.
IF I COULD HAVE ONLY ONE BEAUTY PRODUCT, IT WOULD BE
Concealer with built-in SPF.
"My mum, Ayako Tanaka, inspires me because she's a medical herbalist and uses herbs for natural healing."
THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE OF MY CAREER HAS BEEN
Learning how to manage my repetitive strain injury in my left hand. (yes, I’m a lefty!) Acupuncture is the key!
