Patrick Ta’s kit is the stuff of makeup dreams

“I like makeup that is able to be worn on a red carpet, but also worn walking down the street,” says makeup artist Patrick Ta. Depending on which of his top-tier clients he’s working with—Rosie, Shay, and Gigi among them—that might mean a bright, matte lip or a warm-toned smoky eye. But there’s always, always glowing skin.

That radiance starts with good prep. “Allowing your face to sit in a sheet mask prior to your event always helps,” he says. “The more plump your skin is, the better it will photograph, and the better makeup will look on your skin. So you can actually put on a little bit more makeup, but look like you’re wearing less.” (For those taking notes at home, Ta swears by La Mer, especially for concealer, face oil, and lip balm.)

A peek inside Ta’s kit reveals everything from drugstore makeup to luxury products. Tom Ford lipstick in Flame and the brand’s Shade and Illuminate palette are in regular rotation, for instance, but so is Maybelline Total Temptation Eyeshadow+Highlight Palette, which he used on Rosie for this look. Along with eyeshadow brushes from Anastasia Beverly Hills, he keeps black Beautyblenders on hand for precise foundation application. He prefers a Kevyn Aucoin eyelash curler because “it opens wide, so I can get all of the lashes.” Two more favorites: MAC Pro Longwear Paint Pot in Soft Ochre for well-primed eyelids, plus Giorgio Armani Beauty Lip Maestro liquid lipstick in Dolci, a warm brownish pink.

It’s a dream makeup collection, to be sure—but as Ta points out, the magic lies in what you create with it. “There are so many days in the year where you can wear simple makeup,” he says. “To me, modern beauty is a willingness to try new things.” Spoken like a true artist.
