RHW x NYFW: Oscar de La Renta

Oscar de la Renta is synonymous with so many beautiful things: elegance, color, New York, luxury. And it’s from all those things that RHW’s glam team pulled inspiration for her latest look. Stylist Emma Jade Morrison paired a draped sky-blue dress (by Oscar, naturally) with red wraparound Louboutins, plus some David Webb jewelry for sparkle. Makeup artist Katie Jane Hughes echoed the ensemble with a lush crimson lip, while hairstylist Christian Wood created a jaunty ponytail with movement. Below, Wood and Hughes break down their process for creating this look.

HAIR

Christian Wood’s ponytail is a clever style for second-day hair. But if you’ve just finished a blow-dry, here’s his stylist secret. “For the perfect undone pony with hair that’s freshly washed,” he says, “always add lots of dry shampoo throughout the entire hair to create a next-day, lived-in feel.” (Wella EIMI Dry Me is his favorite.)

This ponytail should feel intentional, but not fussy. “Position the pony just below the crown to add a little swing, which creates a younger, more undone feel.” (Not too high or too low is the goal, he adds.) Wood recommends using elastics with a hook attachment. “It’s much easier to use doing it yourself then a regular hair band,” he says.

Once the ponytail is finished, use your fingers to pull out soft wisps, add texture, and create volume. “Doing so will create a softer, more undone feel,” Wood says. His other technique for creating lift and texture: Gently back-comb the roots of the ponytail and fix with Wella EIMI Stay Firm hair spray.

MAKEUP

SKIN

To begin, Hughes massaged Augustinus Bader The Cream into Rosie’s skin. She then used YSL Le Cushion Encre de Peau foundation for a radiant finish, Nars Translucent Setting Pressed Powder to set, and BareMinerals BarePro 16-Hour Full Coverage Concealer (in light/medium neutral 05) to enhance coverage around eyes, nose, and mouth. She applied Surratt Artistique blushes in Chérubique and Grisaille, diffusing them on the apples of Rosie’s cheeks and connecting the color to her collarbones. Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Colour in #50 added a touch more glow.

EYES

Hughes used warm eyeshadows from the Estée Lauder Goddess Glow palette to create an ethereal, taupe smoky eye. For a statement lash, she cut up Kiss Pompadour strip lashes and placed pieces along the outer corner of RHW’s eyes.

LIPS

Buxom Plumpline Lip Liner in Infrared, drawn all over, was the cherry on top.
