When it comes to Fashion Week street style, it’s hard to miss Emili Sindlev. The Denmark-based stylist and creative consultant’s colorfully-bold looks, from neon green boots to a bright red trench, pair well with her signature curls, free-spirited take on makeup and even her career approach. “I love being my own boss and feeling independent,” she tells Rose Inc from Paris. “I love being in charge of my own destiny. And I love that every day is different for me,” especially during fashion week, which she’s been attending for the last nine years.
We caught up with Sindlev in her Paris hotel room — while she got ready with Rose Inc’s new Satin & Shimmer Duet Eyeshadow ahead of a day of fashion shows and events — to chat about all things Fashion Month SS23. Below, she shares her favorite shows thus far, what she’s looking forward to most during Paris Fashion Week, as well as the beauty and fashion trends she’s most inspired by right now.
Which SS23 shows have been your favorites so far?
Loewe this morning was great. Prada in Milan was also amazing.
Which shows are you most looking forward to?
I'm very excited for Miu Miu. That's one of my favorite brands.
Are there any beauty trends from this month that you’re excited about?
I’m personally excited about makeup-makeup looks. It’s been all about the natural and no-makeup makeup looks for so long, but I've been such a fan of colorful eyeshadows. Even now, I have a very dramatic eyeliner on. I’m also into simplicity. I think it's nice to have some good products that you love that you can easily put on. I hate when things are too complicated. I think it's very important that you can do your makeup in 10 minutes and you don't have to use an hour to get ready.
When it comes to fashion week style, how do you typically build your look? Beauty or clothes first?
Definitely the outfit. But makeup and hair are super important for me as well.
Your hair always looks so great. How do you typically care for it while you’re on the go during fashion month?
My secret is to not brush it or wash it too much. I wash it maybe once a week. When I wash it, I make sure to use a lot of moisture and oils so that it doesn’t get too dry or break off. But yeah, I think with my curls, less is more.
Where do you typically draw your style inspiration from?
I get inspired by my own moods. I also love finding inspiration in contrasts and in all the different and exciting ways people dress. Contrasts are so important to my style, merging masculine and feminine elements. For example, something super sexy with something super casual, or something fitted with something oversized. I think mixing and matching is key to my style and how I balance everything out. Also when it comes to color combinations and the fabrics. Even if I wear all black, it’s important for me to have some statement pieces on or mix and match different materials.

Given that fashion week is such a busy time, how do you practice self-care throughout the month?
I definitely get stressed. I couldn’t go from Milan to Paris because I ended up getting a fever. I was sick for 24 hours and I was just in bed. My body just couldn’t keep going anymore. But it’s really nice to have my boyfriend around. He goes to a lot of places with me and it’s a really nice thing. We try to make sure we have moments together outside of fashion week, like a great dinner or something.
It’s always important for me at night to have a routine and wash my face. In the mornings before shows, I always start with my makeup and hair and literally get dressed 5 minutes before I have to leave. It’s always so busy!
Music is also really important to me throughout fashion week. The Madonna and Beyoncé “Break My Soul” remix has been on repeat at the moment. It’s a great track for getting in the right mood when getting myself ready to go out at night during fashion week. I love listening to Megan Thee Stallion in the car between shows. Mariah Carey is also a great mood booster on gray Paris days. I’m really into Janet at the moment, and “Together Again” is the perfect song for this season because we’re all finally back together at fashion week again.
