Celeb Hairstylist Nigella Miller on The Power of Self
The celebrity hairstylist opens up about all things beauty, from the first time she did her own hair to the industry narratives she’d like to see rewritten
Nazanin Mandi is a true multi-hyphenate. Having grown up just outside of Los Angeles, the natural performer started singing, acting, and modeling at a young age, eventually amassing a CV that includes American Idol, That’s So Raven, and The Young and the Restless; Savage x Fenty, Sports Illustrated, and Shiseido. She’s also a certified life coach and has a line of intimates called Elle Rêve.
“I move with faith,” Mandi says about trusting her intuition through life’s ups and downs. “I do the things that I genuinely want to do and recognize that some people will love it and others won’t. At the end of the day, the more we compare ourselves, the more we’re destined to fail because we’re chipping away at our authenticity.”
Her confidence journey started out rocky in the L.A. suburb of Santa Clarita but grew through hard work in Hollywood. “I always felt like I stuck out like a sore thumb,” she says about her Iranian, Hispanic, and indigenous background. She tried fitting in through her appearance (she even wore blue contacts) but began embracing her unique background when her career took off. “I saw that diversity was accepted and it really amped up my confidence,” she says. “I learned to rock with what I have.”
Here, Mandi opens up more about her biggest inspirations, how she defines beauty and the self-care practices that keep her centered, from going to the gym to taking her vitamins. “My self-care can sometimes ebb and flow if I’m being honest," she adds. "But I try to stay on top of it, even in small ways.”
Do you recall your earliest beauty memory?
My mom has always been into makeup and skincare and she always taught me it's never too early to start taking care of your skin. Growing up, I used her skincare products very minimally and she’d show me how to use them.
Who is inspiring you beauty-wise these days?
I would definitely say Sophia Loren, Salma Hayek and Penélope Cruz.
What are your self-care non-negotiables?
Working out for sure. And reading at least one chapter a day of a book. Knowledge is very calming to me. A book is also a release. It makes my mind focus, which I definitely need because there's so much going on. And then I try to eat as healthy as possible daily. It doesn't happen all the time, let's be honest. I live life and I have my cheat days, I have my meals, but I do try and be as conscious as possible as to what I consume.
It’s amazing that you read so often. What books are you currently reading?
13 Things Mentally Strong People Don't Do by Amy Morin. I just started reading it so I can't say much about it, but I definitely love what I have read thus far. Aside from this, I do like to reread a lot of books that I buy during different periods of my life. It's crazy how your perspective changes over the years and how you might forget something that’s really important. So I like to pick up a book, the same book, maybe two years after I first read it.
If you could only pick one self-care routine to do when you’re in a rush, what would it be and why?
Probably because my hair's so easy, I'd choose makeup and it would be very minimal. It would just be concealer, I would curl my lashes and throw some lip balm on–I can’t leave the house without three fresh lip balms. And then I’d add a tiny bit of blush and I'm done. That's really what I do every day if I put makeup on. Lately I’ve been loving Rose Inc’s Lip Sculpt and Blush Divine
What’s your go-to skincare routine like?
I love any kind of overnight facial lotions that reduce wrinkles. I love a good vitamin C serum and a retinol cream, too. I’ve been using a moisturizer with collagen in it and I love that. I like to wear repairing eye creams, too.
You mentioned your hair routine is pretty minimal. Walk us through how you care for your signature curls!
I don't do a lot. I love R+Co’s thickening shampoo and conditioner, and then after that I will add some Moroccanoil leave-in conditioner. I add it into my damp hair and then I will diffuse my hair and that's it. If my curls come out a little weird, I'll take a ¾-inch curling iron and just curl those pieces. It’s pretty simple. I’ve learned, when you put more product, it just weighs it down, then it gets greasy and then your hair starts to fall.
Would you consider yourself a fragrance girl? If so, what are your favorites?
Yes, I am definitely a perfume girl. I have my go-to: YSL’s Black Opium. That's one of my top choices.
You’re very open about talking about mental health and anxiety, which is beautiful and inspiring. Do you have any sort of mantra that you tell yourself when your spirits are feeling low?
Whenever I get anxious or overwhelmed, I ask myself, ‘Iis this real or is this what my anxious brain is saying and putting on to me?’ Basically, are my thoughts authentic? Is this really happening? Or are my anxious thoughts pushing me to feel this way? Asking myself this keeps me in check and it's a reminder that most of the time we worry about things that won't matter in a couple days. It’s definitely something that takes practice. I wasn't always this way. And sometimes I fall back into letting my anxious thoughts run my day, but really it's not worth it.
When do you feel most beautiful?
I feel the most beautiful, loved and authentically myself when I'm around my family and my best friends. Their humor is nurturing.
